As always, May is heating up and Memorial Day weekend is getting thicker with delicious choices. The String Cheese Incident will headline CaveJam, a new 3-day, multi-stage camping festival at The Caverns in 2024 over Memorial Day Weekend, May 24-26. During the festival, The String Cheese Incident will play two nights with three sets above ground and one special set inside The Caverns world-renowned subterranean venue. All told, the festival will see 20 artists and bands on its stages above and below ground. There’s lots to unpack here.

“CaveJam is a new signature festival at The Caverns and builds on everything we’ve learned from two successful years producing many festivals here,” says Joe Lurgio, The Caverns General Manager. “CaveJam gives festival enthusiasts a new reason—and a new season—to visit us in Tennessee.”

CaveJam will offer a variety of VIP glamping options in addition to everything else that makes The Caverns such a unique destination venue, from otherworldly cave tours and a spacious campground with a vibrant vendor alley to the stunning views surrounding the venue’s outdoor amphitheater where guests can spread out, dance, savor food truck fare, and enjoy the music. And of course, the crown jewel of The Caverns experience remains seeing live music inside a beautiful cave.

Admission to The String Cheese Incident’s special late night cave set is included and guaranteed with a VIP package purchase. Given the underground venue’s limited capacity, a limited number of 3-day passes are available that include access to this epic underground set Sunday evening.

In addition to The String Cheese Incident, the full CaveJam line-up includes Devon Gilfillian, Dopapod, Dumpstaphunk, Karina Rykman, Keller Williams, LP Giobbi: Dead House Set, Mo Lowda & The Humble, Neighbor, Pimps of Joytime, Pink Talking Fish, Space Bacon, Spafford, Susto, The Vegabonds, Barefuzz, BERTHA: Grateful Drag, Easy Honey, LadyCouch, and Love Rat.

CaveJam attendees can choose from an array of on-site accommodations designed to cater to various preferences. At the top end, there’s The Caverns secluded yurt village with 20 climate-controlled yurts, each appointed with a king size bed, private bathroom, kitchenette, and private deck. For the first time at The Caverns, a new glamping option has been added: Stay in a luxury, canvas bell tent equipped with a queen or two twin beds, bedding, bistro table and chairs, and more. For those looking for the VIP experience on a smaller budget, pre-pitched VIP tents with cots, canopies and lights will also be offered. And of course, RV and car camping passes will be available.

All VIP packages include access to all three festival days events, guaranteed access to The String Cheese Incident’s late night cave set, multiple VIP viewing areas, catered brunches and dinners, VIP restroom trailers and showers in a VIP Village, exclusive VIP restroom trailer in amphitheater, private cash bar with daily discounted Happy Hours, access to charging stations, free chair massages, free early access to campgrounds, and VIP concierges onsite to ensure the experience is unforgettable.

On October 6-8, 2023, The Caverns presented the second annual CaveFest, featuring a grand-slam, line-up of music over three days with camping, open underground jam sessions, cave tours, food trucks, local vendors and more. CaveFest brought in Sam Bush, Leftover Salmon, The Infamous Stringdusters, Peter Rowan, The Travelin’ McCourys, Jim Lauderdale, Town Mountain, The Lil Smokies, Lindsay Lou, Sam Grisman Project: Plays Garcia/Grisman’s Shady Grove Album, Jon Stickley Trio, Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley, Larry Keel Experience, The HillBenders: Play WhoGrass, Sicard Hollow, Big Richard, Fireside Collective, Airshow, Two Runner, Pert Near Sandstone, Pixie & The Partygrass Boys, Volunteer String Band, Off The Wagon, Three Tall Pines, Johnny Campbell Band, Big Daddy Love, Tree of Forgiveness – A Tribute to John Prine, Hudost, and Wyatt Ellis & Friends.

Lindsay Lou, the “Queen of CaveFest” returned as one of CaveFest artist-in-residence, who with a dedicated performance slot, she could be found sitting in with others all weekend creating memorable collaborations and magical CaveFest moments.

Everyone who made it to Late Night with Airshow on Sunday were rewarded with a stellar set of Grateful Dead songs and special guests, including Jim Lauderdale, Lindsay Lou, and Fireside Collective’s Carson White (upright bass), Jesse Iaquinto (mandolin), Tommy Maher (dobro).

Decked out in his Nashville Predators “Fiddler” hockey jersey, Sam Bush was the last headliner on The Caverns Amphitheater stage. His “business as usual”set had everyone in the full get down. A recent addition into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame, Sam Bush continues to crush audiences with his mando and fiddle stylings.

Sam Bush at Cave Fest 2023: photo by John Partipilo PhotographyIt’s well known in learned circles that Jenny Keel plays her bass at 528 Hz. “Why does this matter wrangler?”, you may ask. The “love frequency,” is a sound identified by Gregorian monks as part of a set of frequencies heralded for their healing properties. It is also used as a timeless tool by sirens to lure and enslave helpless men. Thank you Jenny Keel, you cannot enslave the willing.

It lurks under the risers. Watch out for stagehands smoking lids under the stage. You think Chris Hollywood is going to carry his own bongo? Sir. Sir. That’s gonna be a hard no. The drummer for Sam Grisman Project is always ready to lay it all the way down in the name of strong science. Look for them at Gem & Jam in February. Hook, hook. Dunk, dunk.

You think you know some wooks? Follow the troglodytes as they take over the festival circuit. #troglife. That’s right, the Fallout Shelter is bringing you a Hobo Kamp experience even more pathetic than representing yourself in divorce court. You already know.

Thanks to Louis Norton for covering CaveFest for the wook wranglers. Thanks to Jenny Lawrence of Danging Lemur Photography for the Big Daddy Love photograph. Brian Swenk is so photogenic.

Thanks for making the wook wranglers your number one source for all things festivaus. Stay with the fam as we hustle through Rome River Jam on our way to Suwannee Hulaween and the oroboros of eternal pleasure. After that, it’s Warren Haynes Presents: Christmas Jam  en route to Resonate and beyond. All roads converge on Ka’aoli and the convergence in Austin, Texas. Maybe the old gypsy woman was correct. This is happening. You’ve found your way to the bus.

Get in, sit down and hold on.

What’s happenin’ Captain? Welcome back to Manchester, Tennessee and the de evolution of the human condition. according to Ka’aoli the wise. In the unwritten parchment of the Bonnaroovian Chronicles the prophet Ka’aoli would predict that somewhere near Rutledge Falls a curvy lady would find a stagehand sexy only because he had a hammock hung under The What Stage. These are certainly strange times and In a world of pain and strife the 2023 festival season continues to improve with each subsequent line up drop. The hits just keep coming and there’s nowhere left to hide. Bonnaroo brings another year of slam-dunk, eclectic across the board music and fun with this year’s promise of the extreme. It’s the Bonnaroo “23: Join the Fray. It’s the season of the wook.

It was a brief but bright run for Lucy and the Iceman last year as they skirted the finest of lines between festival staff superstars and criminal degenerate reprobates. There was a lost computer and some pitifully sad, waffle-stompin’ goodness but the overall vibe was one of powerful, energetic, collaborative good times. There’s plenty of ground to cover and after you’ve made the trip around Outeroo, things will never be the same.        And maybe that’s not a bad thing.

Hot Fried Chicken Contest

Nashville, Tennessee is home to the Cumberland River, The Station Inn, and Hot Fried Chicken. This spicy summer original has been the star of weddings, funerals, and picnics since before kudzu showed up. Passed down through generations of Tennessee kitchens, this recipe received second place at The Music City Hot Fried Chicken contest and has now, found it’s way into your plastic basket. Blame the chef, not the recipe. But don’t be in a hurry. Come sit a spell.

Naturally, if you’re in Nashville you don’t need to make your own hot fried chicken when you can visit Prince’s or Bolton’s and have them take care of you. There’s really no sense in trying to reinvent the wheel. This recipe is for the cracker who wants to get it done in the confines of their own kitchen. If you are visiting the Music City though, there are several other things you may want to check off your bucket list.

THINGS TO DO IN NASHVILLE

  1. The Station Inn: Since 1974, it has become internationally known as the place to go in Nashville to hear bluegrass music. It’s storied history can be heard through the microphones and seen in the layered music posters all over the walls. It can also be smelled in the wet, musty odor that come with all banjo pickers.
  2. Ernest Tubb’s Record Shop: Founded by the legendary Texas Troubadour, they’ve been taking care of country music fans’ needs for 69 years. I found the greatest Willie Nelson poster there and the rumors are true. Willie does hang out in the parking lot after a show until everyone gets their autographs. Nice.
  3. Demo’s Steak House:  The Demos family has established their restaurant as a place where people can enjoy a unique dining experience. One that features great service and a menu of heritage dishes, all handmade with fresh ingredients and served in generous portions. Welcome to Tennessee.

This recipe is all about the big-time flavor and how it just keeps coming. Peppers and El Yucateco® Red Habanero Sauce go in the brine, the dry mix and the spicy coating. It never stops. El Yucateco® is a flavorful sauce that is part of our everyday life. My mother carries it in her purse so my father has enough hot sauce when he goes out to restaurants. It’s summertime and the kids are in the pool. Y’all need to get to fryin some hot chicken.

It’s time to celebrate the summer and enjoy nature, outdoors, friends, family, and El Yucateco®. Think about all the dishes that need two tablespoons of habanero sauce to make them perfect. Most everything.

El Yucateco® Red Habanero Sauce is made with fresh red habanero peppers, tomato, and premium seasonings. Think of it as “all purpose” sauce for anything your heart desires. It has more kick than the average hot sauce with less vinegar, so the true flavor of the pepper comes out when you add it to the mix. It adds a perfect slant to everything from Bloody Mary devotionals to Christmas eve oysters.

It may seem asinine to have a hot fried chicken contest outside, in the middle of a Tennessee summer, but there’s something truly special about hundreds of people hanging together, sweating like pigs in the sun, covered in hot chicken grease.

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. In a bowl, cover chicken pieces with 1 tablespoon kosher salt and 1½ teaspoons black pepper.
  2. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
