The holidays can often be connected with traditions. Some are fantastic and fun and need to last forever while others, tired and cumbersome, ought to be forgotten and discontinued. For instance, sitting at the dinner table with my in-laws in Indianapolis, drinking coffee long after the meal was done. No one was allowed to leave the table even though football was on and the conversation had long since dwindled. Weaksauce. Tamiami Sammy used to get a bushel of raw oysters on Christmas Eve. While simultaneuously filling the baking sheet for casino and Rockerfeller he’d suck them down with cracker and heavy horshradish cocktail sauce. Now there’s a tradition one can get behind. Just like Christmas Jam in Asheville, North Carolina. Welcome to Reflections on Warren Haynes’ Presents: Christmas Jam.

Welcome back to North Carolina and another Christmas Jam, a uniquely Asheville holiday tradition in its 32nd year, kicked off at Harrah’s Cherokee Center – Asheville on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. This year’s offering served up  a heaping plateful of old school rock and roll. You know the kind.

Warren Haynes’ Presents: Christmas Jam 2023: photo by John McFee

In the meat of the Appalachian Mountains, the party returned to Asheville, home to Warren Haynes and the Biltmore Estate. A gathering place for bourgeoisie artists and craft brew snobs, hipsters and hippies.

They were with the world’s smallest harmonica player. He wasn’t small, the harmonica was. The night before they’d ended up on the roof of his condo. Nice place. The gas fireplace exploded in flame as Shane spit a mouthful of moonshine into it, testing the alcohol content. It was the second test, after the taste test and this lighting was definitely on point. Don’t mind the smell of burnt hair and ozone.

Jack of the Wood

Where the rubber meets the road. The Songwriters in the Round showcased Juan Holiday, Christina Chandler, Nic Mac, Melissa NcKinney, Katheryn O’Shea, Whitney Monge, Morgan Geer, Ashley Heath, Keven Fuller, Ray Sisk, Laura Blackley, Aaron Woody Wood, Kevin Smith, Paul Edelman, Leigh Glass and Justin Clyde Williams.

The highlight of the night came when Lucienda Rosalita proceeded to dip her finger in a shot of 151 and light it on fire. She then poured the shot in her gaping maw, light her finger on fire and blew the flames across the bar. In classic Lucy fashion, she bowed proudly to the crowd, all the while forgetting that her finger was still on fire. No more fingerprints, all problems solved.

The Asheville Music Hall

This afternoon party was hosted by Sneeky, Mike Barnes and Friends, Joe Marcinek’s Dead Funk Summit with Jason Hahn, Sam Brouse, Josh Clark and Melody Trucks, The Snozzberries and The Empire Strikes Brass.

Lucy was glad to be photographing the show. She had no money left after two months of vacation and preparation for Christmas. She and Baitbucket had been celebrating “Mexican Monday” three times a week, give or take and now the Buick’s oil pump had gone out at the same time the price tag had come in from the luthier fixing her grandfather’s Martin. She considered it just might be time to return to “private dances” behind the KFC dumpster.

One Stop

This party lineup starred Andrew Scotchie, Paper Crowns, Red Clay Revival, Cody Jasper and  Colby T. Helms. The Girth had been seeing double since the end of the Bloody Mary marathon but the last hour had seen him drinking Pedialyte and a coffee and whiskey. The slurring had stopped and he could see straight(ish).

Lucy was playing with house money. It was a great life and she knew it would be over in about five minutes, so better to enjoy the moment and give it her genuine best effort.

Visit the Christmas Jam website and like their social media sites on Facebook, Instagram and X/Twitter. AI hasn’t yet taken over rock and roll and furthermore, anyone using robot vacuum cleaners still live with piles of dog hair. The world is yours.

Thanks for making the wranglers your one-stop festival shoppe for all things fluffy. Keep up with the Jonses as we survive the high country winter and brainstorm faster ways to join the Florida festival season already in progress. High country, low bar.                                                   namaste y’all…

Don’t sleep on the late-night camping jams either. This is a bluegrass festival at heart so expect some pickin’ and grinnin’. Keep a keen eye out for the Kamp Happiness Family Jam and Hobo Kamp. What it lacks in skill, it makes up for in volume.

Follow the wranglers as we head back to Florida for the winter tour at Suwannee Spring Reunion, Resonate and more. All roads lead to the great eclipse our lifetime in Austin, Texas. The prophesies are coming true. As foretold, the events are occuring in order. The old gypsy woman was right.

About Christmas Jam

Curated and presented by Grammy Award-winning vocalist, songwriter, producer and revered guitarist Warren Haynes, the Christmas Jam is a one-of-a-kind music marathon. Since its inception in 1988, the concert has provided an opportunity for the performing artists, audience, and the local community to give back during the holiday season as Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity’s largest annual contributor. For more than 30 years, Haynes – an Asheville native – has worked closely with the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity. To date, 50+ houses have been built with proceeds from the Jam and more than 2.8 million dollars has been raised, including a record-breaking half-million dollars marking one of the largest-ever contributions to the organization. In addition to supporting the construction of new energy-efficient homes, proceeds also go towards purchasing and developing land to build entire Habitat neighborhoods – such as the 25-house Hudson Hills neighborhood in West Asheville (the subdivision was named in honor of Warren and his wife Stefani’s son Hudson), a 21-house community in Arden (South Asheville) and a 12-family neighborhood of Curry Court in Candler.

Christmas Jam’s rich history continues to grow year after year and has seen unforgettable musical moments from past performers including The Allman Brothers Band, Ann Wilson, The Avett Brothers, Blackberry Smoke, Blues Traveler, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Bob Weir, Branford Marsalis, Brothers Osborne, Coheed & Cambria, Counting Crows, Dave Grohl, Dave Matthews, Dinosaur Jr., The Doobie Brothers, Eric Church, Gov’t Mule, Grace Potter, Hot Tuna, Jackson Browne, James Johnson, Jason Isbell, Joe Bonamassa, John Paul Jones, John Scofield, Johnny Winter, Marco Benevento, Michael Franti, Michael McDonald, moe., O.A.R., Peter Frampton, Phil Lesh, Ray LaMontagne, Sheryl Crow, Steve Miller Band, The String Cheese Incident, Taj Mahal Trio, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Trey Anastasio, Tyler Childers, Umphrey’s McGee, Widespread Panic and many more.

That’s right. Straight from high country and Beech Mountain, North Carolina on July 28-30, 2023 there came three nights of music fun. With craft vendors, food trucks and Beech Mountain Brewing, seasoned veterans danced alongside first-timers in a weekend that helped scratch that festival itch. Beech Mountain’s Summer Concert Series expanded with a bonus weekend of outdoor music. Featuring legendary acts, newly-nominated inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Sheryl Crow, southern rock luminaries JJ Grey & Mofro, American rock titans Dawes, iconic jam-rock outfit My Morning Jacket, and more, Beech Mountain’s “Party on the Mountain” weekend brought three back-to-back concerts to one of North Carolina’s most picturesque venues. Bet. That slaps. All caps.

JJ Grey and Mofrito at Party on the Mountain. photo by Bfly, 2023.

Once again, somehow it all came together. Lucy and Bfly were taking a break from the festival circuit and the Party on the Mountain arrived just in time. Obviously, this was supposed to have been the week of FloydFest and with all its mammoth expectations they would have already been loading-in for the better part of the week. The feeling through the ranks of the mountain collective was palpable. At least now they could start the countdown for next year.

Friday. Sheryl Crow

Where was Corporal Shane Turner when the queen took stage? This was his moment. He had always dreamed of being her guitar tech/towel girl. Like Ma and Pa Kettle, this was the first time any of them had seen a monitor on a door of a refrigerator and they were sounding like old people. “Well I’ll be. Hey honey, come look at this. There’s a dadgum TV on the fridge. Dayum”.

Our staff of trained professionals is ready to serve you. Party on the Mountain, 2023. Photo by that guy your mother used to “date”.

Saturday. The Mofrito.

El Mofrito came in, trumpets blasting Florida golf course laments. Lucy hadn’t seen J.J. Grey since those New Years’ shows at the Buckingham Bar that Tamiami and Ma Roux bartended. At some point the crowd ran into Jaime Hot Damn Danielle Collins. That’s right. A wook wranglers favorite original gangster and mountain songbird. Visit her Soundcloud page and take a listen for yourself. Visit her Facebook page and find out where the next show is happenin’.

Bfly’s bed smelled like a dead animal but the mother ship hot tub was on point. Bet. At some point during the J.J. Grey show she took a wrong turn and ended up in the hidden and forgotten Land of Oz.

Sunday. Katie Pruitt and My Morning Jacket

Lucy woke up early and had to venture all the way to Lees McRae to find a working toilet. By the time she got back to the Aerostream she decided to wait in the car for the next “emergency” which only lay in wait thirteen whole minutes from now.

Litter Kitty had been playing “hard to want” all night but the girl with the Ozempic face had definitely shown some interest. Damn girl. Doctor should have told you to eat less and exercise but sometimes it be like that.

What were they supposed to do with the thirteen pounds they weren’t losing at FloydFest? His plan was to lay dormant all year and watch Netflix, and then lose all the weight during the Ethiopian marathon/sprint that was a week with the Across-the-Way crowd.

Keep up with the wranglers as we try to escape the firmament by sliding through Elements and Secret Dreams. After that it’s an Old Dominion combo with Iron Blossom and Front Porch Fest. September is mostly Lost Lands for the stage builders and of course October means CaveFest, Major Malfunktion and the Hulaween Tenth Anniversary Family Reunion. Yee haw. You got this.

Welcome back to the Cherokee Land of Sky and the wranglers’ Winter Tour of Ice Balls and one-wheel drive. Maybe no-wheel drive. Have the words “winter tour” ever been uttered on this watch? Not till now Cool Breeze. It’s time to forget what you think you know about things and just relax. Having returned to the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains the scout team found their way back to Asheville, North Carolina and the next edition of Warren Haynes Christmas Jam. On board this year was Phil Lesh & Friends (feat. Warren, John Scofield, John Medeski & John Molo), Tyler Childers with his band The Food Stamps, Gov’t Mule, Brothers Osborne, Dinosaur Jr., and Beth Hart. There were also many special guests including Hiss Golden Messenger, Audley Freed, Scott Metzger, Katie Jacoby, Mike Barnes and more. The time for convalescing is past. The 31st Christmas Jam Decorates Asheville.

Who showed up for the hottest ticket in town? Are you kidding? These babies were gone like hotcakes and everyone who’s anyone in the Tarheel state made an appearance. There was FloydFest machine, The Girth and his paramour, Ms.Girth…Ms.Girth? She was never one for self monikers and they, as of the latest reports, were still engaged to be wed. Well I”ll be. Wonders never cease. Everyone agreed it was especial to have this Navidadiest, fiesto grandiesto back on the dance card. It had been a minute since these folks had been together and the magic was in the air.

Soapy from two days in downtown Asheville, they were all there, ready to shred. Hard fun to be sure and folks who hadn’t come together for this party for three years were ready for the certain amalgamation. Following the hiatus, the annual holiday event, also presented by the W&S Charitable Foundation and Stefani Scamardo, once again descended upon Haynes’ hometown of Asheville on Saturday, December 10th for a special evening at Harrah’s Cherokee Center to benefit the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity along with BeLoved Asheville. There was plenty of time to get to all the music and all the people and the Girth was still able to find his way to the smoker’s patio every once and awhile. Can a man get a Turkish Camel for a table dance?

W&S Foundation is particularly excited to bring the Christmas Jam back to Asheville this year with such an amazing and exciting lineup,” said Scamardo. “The long-awaited return of Christmas Jam is sure to be a special moment for all.”

Curated by Grammy Award-winning vocalist, songwriter, producer and guitar legend Warren Haynes, the Christmas Jam is one of the most celebrated and longest-running live concerts in the U.S. Held each year in Asheville, performing artists, volunteers, and friends from all over the country come together to raise funds for the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity. To date, the Jam has raised more than $2.7 million for Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity, constructing over 40 homes. This year’s Christmas Jam has expanded to also assist BeLoved Asheville. From emergency shelter to rental and ownership units, the Asheville region’s housing needs are greater than ever. Many local agencies work along the housing services spectrum and anchoring the ends of that spectrum are Asheville Area Habitat, providing affordable homeownership and home repairs, and BeLoved Asheville, working with those struggling with housing insecurity.

Extra wranglers on their way to Christmas Jam 2022.

“BeLoved Asheville is honored to be a part of the Warren Haynes Christmas Jam this year!,” adds Ponkho Bermejo, BeLoved Asheville Co-Director. “This powerful event lifts local people and warms the hearts of many through music. Now more than ever, we need to make the music that brings us together to support our neighbors and connect deeply with each other. Warren Haynes and friends are so gifted at that and we look forward to jamming with them to lift up elders, essential workers, children and families who are struggling, and those who long for a warm and safe place to call home.”

After a three-year wait, the annual rock n roll Christmas pageant had returned to the source. The line up was heat lightning and holiday cheer bubbled over the packed room like a nineties foam party. There was Brothers Osborne with their country/folk get down slather and of course, God forbid! But there was no way Tenderfoot was going to miss a Phil Lesh show. A novice tarot reader at best, he would say, “It’s just not in the damned cards”. Like many, he and his posse of derelict hippies steered straight for the nexus of the party sans tickets. Wouldn’t matter. They were lot monkeys from way back and usually ended up being backstage, this year being no exception and no one even ended up in love cuffs. Pura Vida.

Dinosaur Jr.: Those screwdrivers were not done with her by a long shot. This was the moment Lucienda Rosalita knew with absolute certitude that she was going to purge in exactly seventy-four adult seconds. She slithered out of the crowd and found it to take exactly that long to navigate the floor and find her way to the water closet on the far side of the auditorium. For once, her timing was impeccable although it may have been a waste of twenty dollars worth of chicken strips, most of which ended up in the curls of her hair. Considering everything, that was all academic. She was where she needed to be and friends were waiting.
Setlist: The Lung-Garden-Been There All the Time-Get Me-Start Choppin

One non-negotiable was the venture out to an Asheville cornerstone, the Orange Peel Friday night. It was the Travers Brothership opening up for Gov’t Mule pre-party. Never miss a Friday show. Lucy was still taking it easy since the weekend of the Cats Under the Stars festival. It was the season to be small dog. Until she wrangled in the tequila during George Porter Jr. Last seen she already had a black eye and was pushing toward the rail hoping to start a mosh pit. She hadn’t seen Kyle Travers since the last time they were at FloydFest. year before last. It was a reminder that Christmas Jam is a local jam with old and new guys coming together in the funkiest ways possible. Tenderfoot apparently bought a shower cap that had been worn by John Scofield. Those are the kinds of things happening. Lucy was glad to be back in the North Carolina-Virginia pocket.

Gov’t Mule
Setlist: Mule-Temporary Saint-Banks of the Deep End-Sometimes Salvation-Ain’t No Love In the Heart of the City-Sailin’ Shoes-Hey Pocky A-Way-I Almost Cut My Hair-Blue Sky
Christmas Jam is about local music and collaborations. Tenderfoot showed up right around Dinosaur Jr. and fell right into the Nestea plunge that was the heavy bass.

Linda Joy and Shrimphead would have loved the C,S,N&Y “Almost Cut My Hair” but Lucy was always waiting for the Allman songs. She was a Buttscratcher and the Brothers is where her bread was buttered. Phil and Friends kicked things off with Wilson Picket and even covered “I am the Walrus” before it was  all said and done. It was plenty to wrap your head hole around.

Tyler Childers: The Girth lived in Asheville so he already knew, these mountain folk went bonkers for the Tyler Childers’ show. They can’t help it. Something about honeysuckle wine, pills and trucks. Appalachian heaven to be sure.
Setlist:  Country Squire-Tom Turkey- Honkey Tonk Flame- Tulsa Turnaround- House Fire-Universal Sound- Way of the Triune God- Heart You Been Tendin’- Rustlin’ in the Rain

It was exactly the night everyone had been waiting for. Asheville was the place last Saturday night and Christmas was jingling through the streets. Along with some blistering bass guitar. Don’t be fooled, Christmas Jam is one of the special nights in this place. See you next year.

Be sure to visit the Christmas Jam website and like their social media channels on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Welcome to the machine. The future is nigh.

Molly and Lila had found their way back to the high country of Virginia and the prolonged pleasure that came with its perfect summers. Once again in the womb of the Shawsvegas Mafia they’d been tasked with following the pulse of the summer festival circuit through the mountains of Clayopheus III The Ludicrous and those of his ilk. It’s the land of ticks and cicadas. Welcome to the The Summer Mountain Festival Lyme Disease Tour “21. Don’t overthink it.

Other than a few moderate wrinkles the road was mostly going as planned. It was an ambitious plan but the Oldsmowagon was still moving forward even if all the warning lights looked like the dashboard of a space shuttle. Lila mused that if her body came with warning lights, they would certainly be blinking. But they were moving too fast and loose to get bogged down in classic themes such as caution and responsibility. It had already been a Florida spring festival season straight from the forgotten pages of the lost scrolls. Kamp Happiness had represented at Maddox Ranch Medicine Show, Spring Fling, Suwannee Rising, Orange Blossom Jamboree and lord knows the stink from Fool’s Engagement wasn’t going to come off for some time. Molly was pretty sure somewhere in there she lost third grade.

They ended up in south Florida ready to get real jobs for a change. The coffers were empty and all the music equipment was still in Boone. Where would they land? Whether bartenders, tour guides or flesh merchants, it really didn’t matter. To Lucy it all sounded pretty crappy. It looked like they were really ready to go straight, work fifty hours a week for a $600 room in someone else’s place and still be broke. While that sounded like solid thinking for a change Fort Myers just wasn’t ready to cooperate and after a balmy and extended spring it was finally starting to get warm in the tropics. Sleeping on the couch of the last angry cellist and admitted toad killer, Lucy was getting antsy and not interested in a real job anyway. She would soon be turning fifty and and as she saw it, her hardest days of hustling for the man were behind her.

As the wells were drying up on Fort Myers Beach the hard truth remained that the very next weekend they had two media tickets to Mountain Music Festival in New River George, WV and that was impossible to ignore. Sometimes the pulp just writes itself. It seemed prudent to load Big Betty into the passenger seat of the Oldsmowagon and set off in search of Appalachian adventure with Brood X.. The weather would be reasonable in the mountains this time of year and eventually they were hoping to get seasonal in the right direction.

Bell’s Palsy is no excuse for bad behavior.

After the Mountain Music Festival in West Virginia, which could only be described as an O-ring blow out, they headed straight down 311 to Field and Furrow Farms in New Castle, VA with its the lightning bugs and frog ponds high in the Appalachian Mountains. Their organic vegetable gardens and mobile chicken coop would offer safe haven and a place to paint rocks while they licked their wounds. Lucy’s mother, who’d been concerned with her ability to shower on the road would be fascinated to find that now they were working strictly with creek baths and hippy shampoo.

The Cascades National Recreation Trail: photo by Lucienda Rosalita 2021

On the banks of Craig’s Creek, New Castle is a a rural hamlet on the Virginia-West Virginia border. With three cops (one trooper, one county and one city) two restaurants and zero bars, save for the Moose Lodge ten miles away which Bucket was seriously considering joining, they figured it was a good place to lay low. Lucy was still sipping off Emmitt’s Gummy Bear moonshine and had managed to procure a little Virginia weed, which was supposedly going to be legal in that state as of July 1st but supplies were ever dwindling and rationing had become necessary.

Summer is the season to build stages, clear brush and drink rum. Bri the hillbilly princess, drove the party down to Spirit Haven where they helped build the new main stage at Front Porch Fest. Molly was under the impression that a little volunteer time would get her in the line-up the following year. They were both very excited to see Katie’s Butthole and its potential was obvious. People were still working at Floydfest almost every weekend, getting ready for that party later in the month. It was all coming together. The summer festival season in Virginia is interactive and completely time consuming. Molly couldn’t understand how people could have real jobs and live the summer festival season. Virginia is for thugs. Like a freight train of stinking funky fun steaming straight into the middle of the brain hole. Splooshness.

Their next stop on the tour was to be Red Wing Roots Festival. They hadn’t been picked up for media so they weren’t yet sure how they were going to get in. It had been a while since either had to pay for a festival ticket and as usual neither of them had any money. But how now brown cow? Tamiami’s solution had always been to wear a tool belt and carry a clipboard and of course neither of them were above crawling in through the woods but these were serious times, festivals needed all the help they could get and Lila really didn’t have the energy for those kinds of childish shenanigans. Besides she still had scars on her leg from sneaking into Lockn’.

Were they going to have to volunteer? Like common street thugs? Ye screaming Gods it might end up like Hulaween and fighting off diarrhea Monday morning while sifting through soggy trash bins for aluminum cans. This time it would have to be better. “Oh don’t worry” they said, “You’ll both get to work under the Pickle.” Whatever the hell that meant. Molly had been in desperate foxholes with creatures like him before and knew better than to trust the words of a deranged man-beast. In the long run, everything was going to be lemon squeezy. Unlike many, Lucy was able to work effectively and comfortably within the framework of the traditional acid high. Promoters often provided her with a daily ration just to keep her at an “even-keel”.

Main stage construction, Spirithaven June 2021

Follow Molly, Lila and the wranglers as they drive the Kamp Happiness conestoga wagon broke and blind through the Virginia mountains in search of epic adventure; music and fun. Red Wing Roots awaits, with Floydfest just around the corner. And next month it doesn’t get any easier. Summer Camp and Mi Kulture straight into Backwoods. Oh the humanity. Molly’s advice, “Skip the job interview and spend the day at Cascades Fall Trailhead.”

Check out the Backwoods at Mulberry Mountain  preview article and revisit the inane gibberish of Mountain Music Festival. Lyme disease is no excuse for bad behavior.

Snow had returned to High Country and along with the ethereal, quiet beauty came the uncertainty. As told in the Mayan codices of Copán, the Chihuahua is the trickster and winter means change. Like the building storm clouds on the other side of the mountain, who can foresee the events yet to unfold? Pablano’s mutant power had always been the ability to see and comprehend events a full seven minutes after they occurred. Useless. At some point underneath the fresh snow trickling water slowly turns to ice. An agent of chaos just waiting on the next opportunity. You just might have to throw out the baby with the bath water. Welcome to the Appalachian winter wonderland and the Queen of the Power Slide.

Sunday, The Villages: Skeet and Pablano had left the pool chairs and the Par 3 golf courses of the sunshine state and headed straight north. Leaving in their wake a curious retired population of golf cart aficionados whose general attitudes regarding the present global pandemic could best be described as lax.

They’d stuffed the hatchback with Big Betty, the upright bass and grandpa’s Martin but there would likely be no busking on this trip. The immediate storm was still ahead of them. The best they could do was get closer to home. He was still just learning to walk on ice and the Oldsmsowagon didn’t have a hand break. Not that it would matter here. The crunching of a fender into a tree makes a sound like the signing of a check. The sing-song of bad insurance.

Monday, Boone: Just south of Blowing Rock the snow was waiting. The powder had been coming down for three days and the mounds were extending onto the road. Pablano was still wearing flip flops. To soften the blow they still had some Virginia White Rhino, a half bottle of El JImador and an apparently bottomless Visine dropper of acid. They would hole up a few days and take a vacation from their vacation. What else is there to do when it’s blowing outside? Light a fire. It must be time for Santa’s Workshop.

The Queen of the Power Slide

Tuesday, Craig’s Creek: The Kamp Happiness Roanoke Mafia had recently procured land just outside of Salem somewhere in the Virginia mountains and it was easy to see the spectrum of possibilities. Chickens and hillbilly hippies everywhere, the creek and the rolling land would someday host gatherings of colorfully lit thugs. It was the kind of place where laws were meant to be broken. In a released statement, ATF officials denied any increased presence in the area in spite of mounting evidence to the contrary. At present, scurrying hither and yon were beautiful women carrying beer cans and power tools. Just as Allah foretold. They slung chainsaws, planed their own timber and used diesel fuel to start bonfires.

Sans Souci-

Luke was yelling but could barely be heard over the hum of the engine and the crackling of pebbles scattering into the brush. Lucienda laughed, “My car doesn’t even have a hand brake. This reminds me of my ’74 Ford Pinto.” Everything she’d learned about power braking she’d learned on the lawless back roads of Honduras. And not on purpose. Necessity is the mother of invention. She’d learned the skills sliding down dirt trails, dodging pregnant dogs en route to bars deep in the jungle. Years before microbreweries would gain popularity D&D Brewery sat at the end of the dirt road, deep in the jungle, playing Eric Clapton. Near Lake Yojoa this bar/hostel served homemade cervezas in a multitude of fruit flavors and was a meca for hippies, drunks and travelers looking for a spot off the grid. With a medley that included pineapple and mango it was great beer and they drank it until they hurt.

“Just stop power sliding! You’re no good at it.” he barked as he grabbed the door handle, not as a method of escape as much as for balance and support. She would say she was excellent at it, but the fact was she was more lucky than skilled. Mostly unsafe. She just didn’t really care about her life or anyone else’s. She would slide straight into a cornfield and once tried to take out a windmill. Anytime she rented a car in a foreign country she made sure it had a hand brake and good speakers.

“Don’t worry baby, I’ve been practicing power slides for years. I had a Big-Wheel when I was a kid so you know what that means. I’m kind of an expert.”

Night On Bald Mountain

Wednesday, Blowing Rock:  An informational/safety meeting had be scheduled for Savanah’s Oyster Bar around sunset. After missing the designated rendezvous it was inferred that Luke and Lucy had headed back to the Tiki Bar on Lake Watauga. There was that cocktail waitress who was really good at the ring-hook game. On their way to Butler they would have to go through Johnson City and right past the last American strip club.
Right past Fuzzy Holes.

This premier gentlemen’s club was located in a part of the country where such things weren’t easy to come by. Sit and be well. The journey to Meca is riddled with strife. Pretty girls, private rooms, parachutes and a fusion lunch buffet with country and Chinese chicken. Something for damned near everyone.

Luke wasn’t expecting what he saw when he entered the dark room. As his eyes adjusted he realized the decor was horror themed. Wall to wall. What the actual hell? Most of the girls were really skinny and with the horror decor, they looked like skeletons dancing around. Luke thought it was a little terrifying. Just like Night on Bald Mountain.

At some point in the evening a portion of the congregation migrated out back for a buyer’s market of generic narcotics and the “dumpster dance” audition of Kloreene and Aja who both were promoting their resume in hopes of landing a job on the main stage.

“With this being my first visit to an adult entertainment club, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The dancers were very nice, on and off the pole. I got a couple table side dances that were very enjoyable. All of the dancers talked to me. I’ll be back.” -TR

Pablano really wanted to get there before they took off. The later it got the greater the chances Luke’s driving would be drastically impaired. He had made that drive from Salida to Telluride but everything was different now. He was getting older and the mental safeguards he had previously used to protect himself from getting too wasted had begun to crumble and fail.

The thing about it was that Luke enjoyed driving on nitrous oxide. He probably understood that it wasn’t safe but would have suggested that he was in a “weird place” so it could be tolerated. The most accomplished of degenerate thugs would agree there are a select group of “vices” that shouldn’t be consumed while operating heavy machinery. NO2 is probably one of them unless you can handle the tinglies and everything going black. There was no getting around it. He enjoyed the open road with a cream charger in his lap and a full box of “Mr. Clinkies” sitting close by. Warning! This product may induce unconsciousness or seizure. Sitting next to some stranger’s tire in the shadows of a parking lot, who can deny the occasional fish? The eyes roll back and the balloon shoots away, spewing the gas back into the either from whence it came. If that’s the case then the idea of driving reveals a self-fulfilling prophecy that at some point reveals itself as the vehicle wrapped around a bridge. Some people just have an itch on the roof of their mouth that only a shotgun can scratch.

All of this made Pablano drive faster through the winding Tennessee mountains…

Welcome back to High Country where the summer spirit of adventure has found its way deep into the scattered crags of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Lest we be waxing Tennyson it can still be said that the lands of the Lost Province are the perfect place to “watch from the mountain walls.” Between Boone and LInville, North Carolina, and with the most perfect summer weather this side of the coffee plantations of Mombacho, the wranglers have found their way to the slopes of Grandfather Mountain. At 5,946 feet (1,812 m) it boasts the highest peaks and most rugged hikes in the Southern Appalachians. Welcome to Destination: Grandfather Mountain.

Covering two-thousand feet of elevation the eleven hiking trails vary in difficulty and ecological communities. From gentle paths along with Watauga River to some of the most “sporting” hiking anywhere adventure seekers can get a serious workout while enjoying some ridiculously amazing vistas.

History

You know how it works. Over 700 million years ago tectonic plates within the earth’s crust came together. Among the results was the creation of one of the highest peaks in the Blue Ridge Mountain range.

The Cherokee named the mountain “Tanawha,” meaning “a fabulous hawk or eagle.” It was later named “Grandfather” by settlers who recognized the face of an old man in one of the cliffs. The area has been recorded in literature by countless historical figures including Daniel Boone (1760’s), Andre Michaux (1794), Asa Gray (1841) and John Muir (1898).

It is the highest peak on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains, one of the major chains of the Appalachian Mountains. It is located at the meeting point of Avery, Caldwell (highest point), and Watauga (highest point) counties. The Blue Ridge Parkway curves past the south side of the mountain and also through the nearby Grandmother Gap.

Trails of Grandfather Mountain:

The west side trails begin at NC 105, near NC 184 (Tynecastle Hwy). A sign reading “Profile Parking” points to the Profile trail, which climbs steadily for 3.1 miles before intersecting the Grandfather trail. From there it is 0.4 miles south to Calloway Peak, and 0.8 miles north to Attic Window Peak. It’s 1 mile to Macrae’s Peak and 1.9 miles to the swinging bridge.

The east side trails can be found at Boone Fork parking area at mile marker 300 of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The trailhead is joined by way of the Asutsi trail at Serenity Farm on Hwy 221. The easiest east side route to Calloway Peak is to follow Tanawha Trail to the Daniel Boone Scout trail. This includes two large fixed ladders that traverse rock faces. The Cragway trail is steeper and littered with boulders but offers excellent views of the Boone Fork bowl, or “medicine valley.”

The Grandfather trail covers the 2.4 miles of ridge line between Calloway Peak and the Swinging Bridge (Linville Peak), passing Attic Window and MacRae Peaks along the way. This trail is among the most difficult and technical in the region. In addition to significant steep elevation gain and loss, trail conditions include frequent exposure to very high winds, contiguity to several large cliffs, crossings of cracked boulders, and multiple traverses aided by fixed ladders and cables. This 2.4 miles is normally covered at below half of normal hiking pace. In favorable weather conditions this trail is considered advanced. In poor weather, this trail should only be attempted by experienced hikers.

Features

The primary ridge of the mountain is oriented roughly north to south, and features four named peaks: Calloway Peak (5,964 ft.), Attic Window Peak (5,949 ft.), MacRae Peak (5,844 ft.), and Linville Peak (5,295 ft.). Although not as high as the adjacent Calloway and Attic Window Peaks, MacRae is much more difficult to reach due to challenging and exposed approaches from both both directions.

The area represents the Eastern Continental Divide. Two rivers have headwaters on Grandfather Mountain, the Linville River, flowing east, and the Watauga River, flowing west. Many lesser streams originate on the slopes of Grandfather, including: Upper Boone Fork, Little Wilson Creek, Wilson Creek (North Carolina), Stack Rock Creek, and others.

The attraction side of the mountain, which includes the Mile High Swinging Bridge, is accessed by way of Grandfather Mountain Entrance Road. Admittance fees are charged at the main gate. Part or all of the attraction is sometimes closed due to frequently inclement weather in the late fall, winter, and spring.

Hiking and camping are free in the “backcountry” area now designated as a state park. The required permits are available at all trail heads. Those intending to enter or leave the park via the attraction must still pay admittance. Fire is prohibited at many of the higher elevation campsites, due to high winds.

Taken from the field notebook of Lucienda Rosalita

“We are on the trail about 6:30 am. A late departure for such endeavors but Thunderbird was up late smoking and drinking rum. The walk up Profile Trail is a wonderland of blooming rhododendron under a thick deciduous canopy. Thunderbird’s knees and ankles are already visibly trembling and we are no less than halfway up the trail. He’s begun grumbling about the size and frequency of the boulder fields. We pass streams and thickets as the trail through the hardwood forest gives way to the “Peregrine’s Flight”, a vertical path of boulders rising all the way to Shanty Spring. This is the last sure water source on the trail, which is good news for those of us who have already began rationing our limited supply. Once again, we have run out of water somewhere near the summit and history has shown us that on the way back down no one will care whether the water running down the side of the mountain is full of parasites or not.

At Grandfather Trail we decide to head south toward Macrae Peak and the swinging bridge. This is an amazing walk/scramble along the ridge line, supplying us with breathtaking views of the mountains all the way to Virginia. It is also littered with boulder-strewn vertical assents that are working to break both the spirit and body. Thunderbird continues to creep ever slower and produce more and louder noises when climbing over and around the rocks. After five hours we both realize it’s time to start heading back or someone is going to be sleeping on the mountain. The trail has gotten no less easier and as his feet and ankles deteriorate Thunderbird’s pace continues to drag. It is like mountain climbing with a manatee.”  l.r. 7/13/20

From the land of the Cherokee, keep up with the wranglers as we forge ahead into the very vortex of summer fun with foundations in advanced tubing. Learn from world champion river tubers as we navigate the raging rivers of Watauga and Ashe counties. Also watch for the five part series, “Lessons in Sloppy Fly Fishing” and answer the question, “How safe are the river trout?”  It may just be another in a long line of serious missteps.

The Eagle

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ring’d with the azure world, he stands.
The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.                Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Welcome to Camping on the Cheap: Chili Tortilla Recipe. For a thug it’s always important to be able to travel without spending a ton of money. That means sleeping in the front of the vehicle at rest areas, learning to camp without ice and cooking a fine meal for just a few bucks. This recipe comes from the Graves Creek Campground in the Olympic Peninsula of Washington. When in doubt, hit the road.

We had just about finished all of Thunderbird’s roadkill elk and everyone was getting sick of potatoes. Hunting grouse had resulted in one failure after another and there was little luck finding fish in the creek. Finances had been a mite lean but now the check was in the bank and we were due to make a run to the Amanda Park general store. A place to grab a meal, find some wifi and play the piano. Things were definitely looking up.

Majestic mountains, drenching storms, lush, dense vegetation help make the Olympic Rain Forest the “emerald jewel” of the Pacific Northwest’s temperate rain forests. The Olympic Rain Forests are just part of the global web of temperate rain forests found around the world.

TEMPERATE RAIN FORESTS:

  • Mild, moist climate mostly affected by the ocean
  • Over 100 inches of rain and fog-drip per year
  • Multi-layered forest comprised of mostly needle-leaf trees
  • Abundant mosses, lichen, fungi, and epiphytes
  • Large amount of standing dead and fallen trees

This easy camping dish doesn’t require any refrigeration or ice as everything comes from a can. Welcome to camping on the cheap in Washington’s Olympic Peninsula.

  • can of diced chicken (optional)
  • salt
  • pepper
  • Tony Satcheries
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Heat a small amount of oil in a skillet
  2. crisp tortillas for a few minutes on each side
  3. set aside
  4. Mix Rotel tomatoes, corn and chili in saucepan
  5. season to taste
  6. heat until ready
  7. serve over tortillas

Lucienda Rosalita used both corn and flour tortillas for this recipe due to the fact we were frying them. The can of chicken can be added but if you’re really traveling on the cheap, it might be better to save the chicken and have protein for another meal. The general store in Amanda Park has everything you need and sells 40 flour tortillas for seven bucks.

When considering the oil in the recipe, stay away from butter or other ingredients that need to be refrigerated. At first we used leftover chicken grease and black truffle oil for the chili tortilla, which works fine in a pinch. Crisco or lard travels well and holds up in all kinds of weather.

As moisture filled clouds move inland, they release more than 12 feet of rain annually on the western slopes of the Olympic mountains. As elevation increases, more precipitation is released. On the east side of the Olympic Peninsula, the moisture-depleted clouds provide much lower rainfall, less than 20 inches per year in the “rain shadow”.

If you’re stopping for a night near Ruby Beach, swing in and stay a spell with Mr. Jimmy at the Rain Forest Hostel, the newest member of the nailtravels family. For ten bucks a night, or whatever you can spare, Jimmy will provide you with a warm bed, great conversation and soft guitar music. He will insist on giving you his ten minutes on Bernie Sanders and then everyone is expected to volunteer for fifteen minutes the next day to help out around the house. It’s not too much to ask and we ended up hauling stumps from the forest that would soon be split and used to build a monster wall of wood for the wet winter. If you’re in the neighborhood, just down the road, check out Ruby Beach around sunset for a spectacular view.
